About This Drill
The Hammered Pair (also called a controlled pair or double tap) is a foundational shooting drill where you fire two shots in rapid succession on a single target. The goal is to deliver both rounds accurately while managing recoil and tracking your sights back to the target between shots.
This drill builds the core skill of recoil management—learning to let the gun cycle while keeping your grip and stance stable, then quickly reacquiring the sights for the follow-up shot.
Start with a generous par time (2-3 seconds from ready) and focus on two good hits. As your technique improves, tighten the par time. Expert shooters can deliver a hammered pair in under a second from low ready.
Common mistakes include anticipating recoil on the second shot and rushing before the sights are back on target. Focus on a smooth trigger press for both shots.
